Spray vs Gel

Spray vs Gel

Posted by Freddy on 27th Oct 2020

Scuba diving is a sport full of decisions. Just about every piece of equipment brings with it options for you to pick from. Sometimes the decision is mundane, other times it is critical. Today’s question is almost entirely a matter of preference - spray vs gel defog. Which is best? Spray is certainly a simpler application, but some of our divers swear the gel lasts a lot longer during the dive. A lot of divers claim the spray doesn’t leave enough of a coating to last long, while others claim the gel muddles their vision. So what’s the right answer? Well, there is none.

You would think the question is political the way some defend their position. Ok, lets say personal preference. But leave it to Leviathan Scuba to go further on the answer.

Spray. Pros. Clearer than gel, easy to apply, simply spray on rub a bit and dive.  Cons. Bottle leaks easier in your luggage. Doesn't last as long as gel, Usually only 1 dive. Pump sprayers often malfunction.

Gel. Pros. Lasts longer. Usually 4-6 dives. Use what you want. 1 drop or 10 drop are easier to measure than liquid. Doesn't leak in luggage. No leak if you tip the bottle over. Cons. Can be gloppy and needs smoothed out on lens. Seems to dry up faster.

Freddy's answer?  The chemical analysis is exactly the same within brands. They offer both spray and gel. So, the spray is watered down gel. I mix a small amount of distilled (no minerals) water in my gel to thin it out. But, not as thin as spray. I get good coverage thicker than the spray so it lasts longer and it doesn't glop on my lens. Plus it lasts longer than spray, maintains fluidity in the bottle longer and I get more for my money. Try it on your shower mirror, just sayin.
