How to Clear a Snorkel Properly

There is a proper way to clear a snorkel — and it does not involve blasting air like a whale.

Many snorkelers surface and try to blow as hard as possible to force water out of the tube. This often leaves water behind, causes gurgling, and leads to inhaling water back in.

If you remove your snorkel from your mouth to dump it, you're doing it wrong.

Watch: Stop Blowing Like a Whale

Freddy demonstrates the correct snorkel clearing technique and explains why slow, controlled exhalation works better than force.

Two Types of Snorkels

Open-Top Snorkel

Simple and affordable. Water can fully enter the tube and must be cleared manually.

Dry-Top Snorkel

Includes a valve that limits water entry. Still requires proper clearing technique.

No matter which snorkel you use, technique matters.

Why Blowing Hard Doesn't Work

When you blow forcefully:

  • Friction inside the tube slows water movement
  • Water partially exits, then falls back down
  • Residual water collects in the reservoir
  • You end up gurgling and inhaling water

Force is not the solution. Timing is.

The Proper Snorkel Clearing Technique

  1. Keep the snorkel in your mouth.
  2. Turn the snorkel vertical as you ascend.
  3. Begin a slow, steady exhale underwater.
  4. As you approach the surface, continue exhaling.
  5. At the moment the snorkel tip clears the surface, give a small finishing puff.

The water exits from the bottom as air replaces it from below.

Slow exhale underwater. Small puff at the surface.

Why This Method Works

You are not forcing water upward. Instead, you are displacing it gradually as air fills the tube.

This prevents water from falling back down and eliminates the need for aggressive blowing.

FAQ

Should I remove my snorkel to clear it?

No. Proper technique keeps the snorkel in your mouth at all times.

Why do I still hear gurgling?

You are likely blowing too hard or too late. Begin exhaling before you reach the surface.

Does a dry snorkel eliminate clearing?

No. Dry snorkels reduce water entry but still require proper technique.
