Shark Bait Ooh-Ha Ha

On average, there are only 8-12 shark encounters per year in the U.S. that actually result in an injury. Due to record numbers of beach-goers during COVID, 2021 had the highest number of injuries reported from shark encounters. Globally in 2021, there were 73 unprovoked encounters resulting in injury.

In Florida, Volusia County had the most shark bites (17), representing 63% of the state’s total.

The Important Part for Scuba Divers

Surfers accounted for 51%. 

Swimmers and waders accounted for 39%. 

Snorkelers and free divers, spearfishing was 4%. 

Body surfers and playing at the beach was 6%. 

Scuba Divers were 0% in 2021.

The thing to remember here is that although the percentages do change from year to year, they are roughly the same per activity. Scuba diving is the lowest category of danger concerning sharks.
